<![CDATA[myprojectlife - Gun Range Project]]>Wed, 12 Oct 2011 09:53:14 -0800Weebly<![CDATA[Membership at outdoor range :)]]>Sun, 02 Oct 2011 11:38:20 -0800http://www.myprojectlife.com/3/post/2011/10/membership-at-outdoor-range.htmlI don't have any pictures yet, but I just became a member of the Escondido Fish and Game which has an outdoor range.  I am super excited about shooting outside since this is one of the only outdoor ranges here in San  Diego.  The only bummer about the range is that you are only allowed to shoot at paper targets, and I was hoping to shoot a few pumpkins which is obviously not allowed.  Anyway, I've only had a chance to get out there once so far, and it is sooooooooooooooo much nicer than shooting at an indoor range.  I will take some pictures next time I go, but it is super nice to get outside and shoot.  Although, the closest target is at 15 yards so it takes a bit more concentration, but is loads of fun :)

*update on my colt* So the sights on my baby colt are off.  I need to go through the manual and figure out how to adjust the sights which I would imagine isn't that hard, but I just don't know how to do it yet.  Anyone, have any good suggestions on how to adjust them?
]]><![CDATA[Smith and Wesson 22 LR 6” Barrel & Buckmark Camper 22 LR]]>Sun, 17 Apr 2011 21:54:17 -0800http://www.myprojectlife.com/3/post/2011/04/smith-and-wesson-22-lr-6-barrel-buckmark-camper-22-lr.html Well I was going to go to the range today and work on my NRA marksmanship program, but instead, I decided to have a bit of silly fun and rent 22’s!  I got both the Smith and Wesson 22 revolver and the Buckmark Camper.

I would have to say that I love how much easier it is to load ammo into the revolver than the buckmark pistol, but the trigger pull on the revolver is freaking heavy!  My Springfield GI 1911 45 is about a 5 pound trigger pull, and I would guess the revolver is around 10 pounds or so.  It is very difficult to pull the trigger on the revolver, but it is soooooo much easier to load.

The buckmark pistol has a super light trigger pull, but loading the little 22 ammo into the magazine is a pain in the ass.  The one thing that was pretty cool on the buckmark was the front sight.  The front sight was actually an open circle so you could see right through it and at the target. 

But 22 shooting doesn’t really have much to do with aim more as it is to unload the pistol as  fast as possible, and with that, I was actually surprised that I got a grouping on the target as well as I did (I suppose it is all that practice with my 45).

]]><![CDATA[Kimber Custom II 1911]]>Sun, 17 Apr 2011 16:40:56 -0800http://www.myprojectlife.com/3/post/2011/04/kimber-custom-ii-1911.html This Kimber Custom II 1911 45 caliber pistol was awesome to shoot.  It had a skeletonized hammer and trigger with a one sided safety.  It had the white 3 dot sights with a flared ejection port. 

When I first shot this pistol, it took me by surprise by the how light a trigger pull the Kimber had.  It seemed like I barely touched the trigger before it fired.  It took me a little while to get used to the gun as I was shooting as you can see by my first target (yellow target below).

However, once I got used to the trigger, I started shooting a lot better, and I really enjoyed shooting this 1911.  I had gone to the range with my dad this time when I rented it, and he actually really loved shooting it too.  On a side note, he is finally starting to dislike his taurus now that he has shot this 1911.  Anyway, I liked this pistol and it might be one that I add to my collection in the future.  But at around $1,000, it is going to have to wait awhile.

]]><![CDATA[Colt 1911 XSE Government Model Birthday Present!]]>Thu, 17 Mar 2011 23:42:01 -0800http://www.myprojectlife.com/3/post/2011/03/colt-1911-xse-government-model-birthday-present.htmlT got an early birthday present!!  Although, the hubby won't let me do anything to it other than take some pictures and put it in the safe until my birthday.  He won't even let me clean it!!  But at least I got some pictures before it is into the safe :)  So pretty!  I can already tell that this colt is going to be my pride and joy for the rest of my life.  Can't wait to shoot it at the range!
]]><![CDATA[Sig Sauer 1911 Stainless Steel 45]]>Sun, 13 Mar 2011 21:53:07 -0800http://www.myprojectlife.com/3/post/2011/03/sig-sauer-1911-stainless-steel-45.html This 1911 came with a lowered 3 dot sights, left side safety only, skeletonized hammer, regular trigger, exterior extractor, and rail.  I am partial to the stainless steel so I liked the aesthetics of this gun. 

This pistol had a freaking hair trigger.  It kept surprising me just how quickly it would fire.  You would barely have to touch the trigger and it would go off…  A bit too quick for my tastes compared to my Springfield GI and the other 1911’s I have fired. 

Other than that, this pistol handled great and had no problems.  Most 1911’s are about the same with different frills depending on your preferences.  This pistol was fun to shoot, but if purchasing a 1911, I would look to a Springfield over this one just because you can get nicer grips, etc and for the cost I’d go with Springfield.  I liked the gun, but it was kind of bland, and like I said, I would go with a different 1911 given a choice.

]]><![CDATA[Browning Buck Mark Standard Stainless URX 22]]>Sun, 13 Mar 2011 21:37:21 -0800http://www.myprojectlife.com/3/post/2011/03/browning-buck-mark-standard-stainless-urx-22.htmlI took a little bit of a break from the 45's and rented a 22 :)  What can I saw about the Browning 22?  It’s a 22 lol.. It is a far cry from the 45’s, and it doesn’t even seem like a ‘real’ gun just by how small a caliber it is.  I even feel confident in shooting it with 1 hand which is why there are a few flyers near the outside ring of the target (it is hard to keep one hand steady lol).

Any time I have shot a 22, I just want to load it up to full capacity and fire as fast as possible.  I’m not sure if that has to do with the caliber size, the cheapness of the ammo, or what, but that is really all I want to do with it.  It has nothing to do with actual aim when shooting the 22. 

So I had rented this gun a few months ago, and every single time I pulled the trigger it jammed.  EVERY single time… so I took it back and had gotten a different 22 that didn’t jam as much.  However, this time I rented the same gun, and out of 100 rounds, it jammed only once.  It just needed a good cleaning from the last time I had rented it because it ran pretty good this time.

There’s not much to say about this gun other than it is a lot of fun to fire quickly lol.  I definitely would not want this gun for home defense because it seems that you would just make someone angry if you shot them with it rather than stop them from coming at you, but for shooting at the range, it’s a fun little pistol.  I could see this being a good beginners gun for a younger kid since it isn’t too heavy and has very little recoil.

]]><![CDATA[Rock Island Armory Tactical 1911 45]]>Sun, 13 Mar 2011 20:40:57 -0800http://www.myprojectlife.com/3/post/2011/03/rock-island-armory-tactical-1911-45.htmlI had heard a lot of good things from the Internet on the Rock Island Armory 1911s.  Even though they are reasonably priced compared to most 1911s, they are supposedly reliable and well manufactured pistols.

Before I go into the review of this 1911, I will have to first admit that I am somewhat biased against the Rock Island Armory, and I will tell you why.  Last year, I was looking at purchasing a Springfield Loaded 1911 full size which run about $900 here.  I went into a few gun shops looking for it, and all the stores were out of that model, but I went into this one gun shop/range in Kearny Mesa.  As I was talking to the guy if they had the loaded, he told me “Well, no we don’t have that one, BUT we have this lovely rock island armory pistol…”  Now, I was a bit insulted by the fact that the gun he was showing me was about ½ the price of the one I wanted, and from what I’ve heard RIA are good guns, but seriously??  It was like going into the lexus dealer looking for a lexus and the sales guy pointing me to a kia.  Anyway, I was a bit annoyed at that guy, and so I am somewhat tainted by my experience at that store. 

SO now that is out of the way, I will try to have an unbiased review, but that might be difficult.  I went to the range and rented the Rock Island Armory Tactial 1911 that came with 3 dot sights, a skeletonized hammer and trigger, adjustable sights, and an ambidextrous safety.

It was a pretty gun with lots of extra features added to it, but the sights appeared to be off on the gun (stupid people messing with the sights).  Every time I lined up the sights and fired, it shot low, and I had to bring the front sight up above the back sights in order to start shooting center.  Someone messed up the stupid sights, but just like I had mentioned before, that is the risk you take renting the range guns.

Because the sights were off and it had a pretty heavy trigger, I would rate this as a B.  It was a typical 1911 with some frills, but I didn’t like the heavy trigger pull or that the sights were off… otherwise not bad, but I definitely like the other 1911’s I’ve shot.

]]><![CDATA[Springfield XD 4" Barrel 45]]>Sat, 05 Mar 2011 13:30:31 -0800http://www.myprojectlife.com/3/post/2011/03/springfield-xd-4-barrel-45.htmlThe two toned Springfield XD 4” 45 caliber that I rented was ugly as sin!  I guess I get the idea that you might be in the forest with your pistol and that you need it to ‘blend’ in with the surroundings, but for God’s sake, just get a full black gun!

Okay, now that I’m off my high horse regarding the color, I can give it a review lol.  The Springfield XD came with 3 dot adjustable sights, a trigger safety, grip safety, and 10 round capacity double stack magazine.  The trigger safety really just means that it takes what seems like forever to fire as it disengages the safety when you pull the trigger.   I do like the additional feature of the grip safety as it reminds me of my 1911, and the XD’s grip safety is much smaller than the 1911’s.  I do have to say that the Springfield double stack magazine was really easy to load ammo into and it seemed like a much better quality magazine than the USP.

The gun was rather accurate when I was shooting although I think someone had messed with the adjustable sights because it was shooting low.  I typically either shoot left or right of center, but when I started shooting this one I kept hitting low even as I had lined up the sights properly.  In order to hit the center I had to bring the front sight up higher than the back sights and then I was hitting center.  So I’m not sure who  messed with the sights that way, but that is a risk you take when renting range guns.

I liked the way the gun felt in my hands as it wasn’t very heavy, but I do not like the two toned color scheme.  If I were to purchase this gun, I would definitely get the full black color and obviously, have the sights be adjusted correctly.

]]><![CDATA[H&K USP Full Size 45]]>Fri, 04 Mar 2011 19:25:49 -0800http://www.myprojectlife.com/3/post/2011/03/hk-usp-full-size-45.html So as I stated before, I am starting at the bottom of the gun range case and working my way up, and the next gun in the case is the H&K USP full size.  This is pretty much the exact same gun that I rented last time except it is a 5” barrel rather than the compact size.

Therefore, it has the same features such as 3 dot sights with an 10 round capacity double stack magazine.  This double stack magazine was a lot easier to load rounds into so I am guessing that it is much more broken in than the compact version was.  One thing that this gun had that I don’t remember the compact being is that it had a hair trigger.  It fired so quickly when pulling on the trigger, and I kept being surprised at just how fast it would fire.

Overall, I really enjoyed shooting this USP, and it was pretty accurate too.  It always takes me a few shots to get used to how the gun fires, and then after that I can typically group pretty well (see target below). 

But like the compact, the USP has that weird magazine release that I am not fond of which is why it doesn’t get a grade A in my book, but otherwise, lots of fun!
